We get a lot of music submitted to us at BowlingStone.com. Sometimes it is quite good and sometimes it is not so good. Every now and then however, we receive something that absolutely blows us away, and that’s what we love about running an indie music blog that makes no money.
I was hooked on today’s tune from the first line, and have not been able to stop listening to it since. Hellacopters comes to us from the new-wave/post-rock quartet Black Mercies, and can be found on their 2008 release Murder It Sweetly. Hopefully this doesn’t come across as sacrilege to U2U2 reviews
fans, but does anyone else hear a young Bono when they listen to the vocals on this track?

It starts with the kick drum
And the pounding of your heart
In the City of Angels
Things sure can get dark
When your sweating out the details
Unraveling a bit
Carving out your defects
All that’s left is silhouette
And you and I, killing the moonlight
No alibi but a golden winter
That stars could splinter
And love would crack us in two
‘Cause hearts they beat like hellacopters
Hellacopters yeah
They cut like guitar strums
These thorns around my heart
But in the City of Roses
The sun sure means a lot
To you and I, staring starry skies
No diamond highs
But a golden ember that burns forever
And nothing will crack us in two
‘Cause hearts they beat like hellacopters
Hellacopters yeah
Don’t leave me this way, hearts beating astray
Don’t leave me lying and bleeding
Don’t leave me bangin’ and beating
On my chest for just one more kiss
‘Cause hearts they beat like hellacopters
Hellacopters yeah
