I came across an article today from AmericanSongwriter.com highlighting 25 of their favorite songs from 1984-2009.  The list includes an amazing range of artists from My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, and Bright EyesBright Eyes reviewsBright Eyes reviews to Garth Brooks, Tom Petty, and Bob DylanBob Dylan reviewsBob Dylan reviewsBon Iver’s Flume was also included in this list, and I forgot how much I enjoyed it.  Flume was the opening song to Bon Iver’s debut album For Emma, Forever AgoFor Emma, Forever Ago reviewsFor Emma, Forever Ago reviews, released in February of 2008.  The album was the product of a 3-month “hibernation” Justin Vernon took in a secluded northwestern Wisconsin cabin, following the break-up of his previous band.  The following quote does a gorgeous job of explaining the album’s creation:

“All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song”

I am my mother’s only one
It’s enough

I wear my garment so it shows
Now you know

Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she’s the moon

I am my mother on the wall, with us all
I move in water, shore to shore;
Nothing’s more

Only love is all maroon
Lapping lakes like leary loons
Leaving rope burns --
Reddish ruse

Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she’s the moon

  • That song reminded me of the likes of Elliot Smith and Jonah Matranga, but the vocals were unexpected.
He was using falsetto, with some sort of effect, and it gave him a sort of typical alternative/indie band voice.
It was a great combination of music, in my opinion.
