Song Review

Calgary officially has a winter storm warning in effect, which means the 5 minute drive home from work took a staggering 90 minutes today.  This is a significant difference.  In honor of the weather outside, I’ve decided to post one of my favorites from the Canadian indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene.  I will send a t-shirt to anyone who can figure out the connection.  Hint: there may not be a connection, maybe I’m just looking for an excuse to post this song.  Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl can be found on Broken Social Scene’s 2nd full-length effort, the 2002 release You Forgot It in People.  The album is considered, by many, to be Broken Social Scene’s finest work to date, displaying a certain spontaneity the band’s follow-up album could not capture.  I think any critique of Broken Social Scene is kind of pretentious, sort of like the couples who quarrel over whether or not their $300 bottle of wine was too oaky.

Used to be the one of the rotten ones
And I liked you for that
Now you’re all gone, got your make-up on
And you’re not coming back

Bleachin’ your teeth, smiling flash
Talking trash, under your breath
Bleachin’ your teeth, smiling flash
Talking trash, under my window

Park that car, drop that phone,
Sleep on the floor, dream about me

Used to be the one of the rotten ones
And I liked you for that
Now you’re all gone, got your make-up on
And you’re not coming back
