I was sitting on the couch this morning, trying to decide if the milk in my fridge that expired 3 days ago was still good for cereal, when I saw that PhoenixPhoenix reviewsPhoenix reviews would be the musical guest on SNL tonight.  My introduction to the French indie-rockers came about 5 years ago, thanks to the Lost in Translation soundtrack.  The song I chose to highlight from the band today is 1901, off of the band’s upcoming fourth studio album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.  According to the band’s website, the new album is set to be released on May 25th, 2009.

Counting all different ideas driftin away
Past and present they don’t matter
not if you just sort it out
Watch your moving in elliptical pattern
Think it’s not what you say
What you say is way too complicated
For a minute thought I couldn’t tell how to fall out

Oh It’s 20 seconds til the last call
Going hey hey hey hey hey
By now, you know its easy
like we did it all summer long
And I’ll be anything you ask and more
Going hey hey hey hey hey
It’s not a miracle we needed
And no I wouldn’t let you think so

Falling, falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling

Girlfriend, you know your girlfriends drifting away
Past and present, 1855 1901
Watch them build up a material tower
Think it’s not gonna stay, anyway, think it’s overrated
For a minute, thought I couldn’t tell how to fall out

Uh It’s 20 seconds to the last call
going hey hey hey hey hey
Lie down, you know it’s easy
like we did it all summer long
And I’ll be anything you ask and more
going hey hey hey hey hey
It’s not a miracle we needed
and no, I wouldn’t let you think so

Falling, falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling

Phoenix friggin' rocked it last night on SNL... "1901" is going to be on a load of year end lists, and Wolfgang might be the best album Phoenix has ever made - which is saying a lot.
  • Yeah I certainly hope it makes it onto a lot of "best of 2009" lists. I haven't listened to the entire album yet, but what I have heard so far is really really good.
