In the same fashion as every music blogger in the world, I’ve spent the last couple weeks working on my “Best of 2009″ list. However, it seems like as soon as I get the song-filled post-it notes in an order I feel good about, I hear something that makes me re-consider the list; is that Islands song really as good as I think it is? Does Dan Mangan need to be listed multiple times by another indie blog? Today’s song is anther number that has me spreading songs out over my coffee table. Let’s Dress Up Again is an adventure of a track, from the Montreal six-piece The Coward and the Pelican, and their debut EP “Silhouettes”. The way the band commands the song through a number of ebbs and flows strikes me as far more experienced then a band who has only released one EP; plus I quite enjoy how days later I’m still waiting for the epic finale crescendo to peak. For more from the band, check out their MySpace here. I should also relay a message from band co-founder Phil that the song’s vampire references are not Twilight related.
Oh, my Lord, look at her teeth
They’re stained with blood, and so sharp and pointy!
She must be the most beautiful vampire I’ve ever seen,
This side of my street
The scar on his face,
His wicked wooden leg,
They make my heart race!
And I’ve always had a thing for crooks,
The wretched and the mean,
This is my very own Captain Hook
I don’t dare invite her to eat her candy with me,
I swear I’d give her my last Popeye stick!
That stupid pirate! For him, I’d sail the seven seas!
Now, if only he would sail to me and offer me a treat…
I wandered off,
Brave as I could be..
I kissed you on the neck,
Left a trace with my vampire teeth,
You were lost but now you are found,
So stay with me!
Let’s dress up again, let’s dress up again
We were lost, but now we are found
So let’s dress up again!
Let’s dress up again, let’s dress up again
We were lost, but now we are found
So stay with me!
Oh, my love, look at us now, we’re just so old,
My love, we’re at each others throats
My love, and not in a good way…
You were the most beautiful vampire,
I saw through your eyes, in the pupil was a fire,
I was the loneliest of the pirates on the sea,
I don’t want your silver, I don’t want your gold,
I just don’t want to grow old!
I want to grow young with you! (x4)
I want to grow young with you, I know what I want! (x4)
