Gavin Gardiner of The Wooden Sky has piles of perfectly-formed melodies scattered around his home, I’m convinced of it. Every song I hear from the Toronto indie/folk-rock ensemble finds a way to lodge itself into my brain and gently gnaw, relenting only after I perform it for friends from my couch. The Late King Henry can be found on the band’s sophomore LP “If I Don’t Come Home, You’ll Know I’m Gone”, released in August of 2009; The album was produced by Montreal producer Howard Bilerman, who has been behind releases from Arcade Fire, The Dears, Basia Bulat, and Bell Orchestre. To catch one of the band’s live shows, which have been described to me as “the sweatiest sing-along you’ll ever be a part of”, their tour schedule for early 2010 is posted below. Two song previously featured on the site are also posted below.

Well, we built this house on a web of lies
And when the walls fell in I came to realize
That if your love don’t leave you then you’re allright
And baby we’ve a-got it made
Well, the river rose up and came to me last night
And took the hat right off of my head
You said, Honey don’t you let it push you on your back
Because you forgot your age
Come on and save me
Take me to the river and bathe me
Just don’t let nobody else claim me, honey
Take me to the river and name me
Tell me that it’s all right
Well, the late King Henry came to me last night
Said you get your wings when you go straight
Well, no one on the river ever needed to fly
To lead their poor hearts astray
Come on and save me
Take me to the river and bathe me
Just don’t let nobody else claim me, honey
Take me to the river and change me
Tell me that it’s all right!
Yeah, tell me that it’s all right!
