Really fantastic song up today from the Kelowna, British Columbia progressive indie-rock trio We Are The City. Originally formed in 2006 under the name “Seraph”, the band changed their name to “The City” in 2007, and then added the all important “We Are” in May of 2008. Consisting of Cayne McKenzie on vocals and keys, David Menzel on guitar, and Andy Huculiak on drums, We Are The City deliver a completely unexpected, but welcomly familiar, sound. Case in point, today’s song Astronomers, from the band’s 2009 album “In a Quiet World”, opens with gorgeous piano-backed harmonies that surprise in the same way as Animal Collective’s, before diverging into the guitar-driven section of the song that seems to summon measures from Paranoid Android. For more from We Are The City, the new album is streaming on the band’s website here. As well, an early 2010 tour schedule is posted below.

Maybe theres a weight
on the weight the stars weighed
for the light of day
and the way light moves
I’m tired of the constellations
and fights for euthanasia
did we ever really land on the moon
And maybe theres a weight
on the words ‘I miss you’
do they repress you
thats the way love moves
I’m tired of the constellations
and stars be in every solution
For the way I feel
And men weren’t meant for mars
and oh my love
will we be the same
And oceans pale
that fill my heart
filling out a space in time
Oh my love
we be the same
Oh my love, wo-oah
we be the same
the same, my love
